Types of Dental Braces

Dental braces are recommended for people who need to align and straighten their teeth. These are devices used in orthodontics aiming to improve dental health. They correct problems such as crowded or crooked teeth.

There are different types of dental braces available catering to the needs of each individual. Each type of dental brace has its characteristics that are to be taken into consideration. The following are the varied kinds of dental braces:

Traditional Metal Braces

These are the most common types of braces. It is typically the least expensive option but is more effective. They are usually made out of metal and involve brackets attached to the teeth and connected with wires.

Some people feel self-conscious wearing traditional braces as they are the most noticeable types.

  • Ceramic Braces

Though ceramic braces are very similar in size and shape to traditional braces, they are made up of ceramic material. This type of braces is less noticeable as it blends with the natural color of the teeth. Though they are less visible, these are larger than metal braces and may become stained if not properly cared for.

  • Lingual Braces

Though they are similar to traditional braces, lingual braces are attached to the inside of the teeth. One of the major advantages of lingual braces is that they are hidden behind the teeth, making them invisible to other people. They are difficult for others to see from the outside. They are, however, less effective and take more time to achieve the desired tooth alignment.

  • Invisalign

These are the most distinct kinds of dental braces. They are made up of custom-made clear plastic aligners without involving the use of brackets and wires. They are worn over the teeth and are easy to remove and replace throughout the treatment period. This type of braces allows greater freedom to drink and eat anything.

  • Self-Ligating Braces

They are available in metal or clear materials and work similarly to metal and ceramic braces. Instead of using elastic rubber types, ligating braces use clips to hold the wire in position. They are suitable for patients who are sensitive to discomfort and who cannot sit still in the dental chair for a longer time. They require only mildly shorter appointment times.
